Planning a trip to Georgia’s wine region can feel overwhelming—there’s so much to explore, yet surprisingly little comprehensive information available. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

When planning your trip to Kakheti, you might be tempted to book a day tour from Tbilisi. Platforms like Get Your Guide offer plenty of options, and while these tours are great if you’re short on time, trust us—you’ll want to spend at least two to three nights in the region. Kakheti’s charm isn’t just in the wine; it’s in the slow, immersive experience of vineyard stays, breathtaking landscapes, and the deep-rooted history of Georgian winemaking.
WHY VISIT KAKHETI
Kakheti, Georgia’s premier wine region, is just a 1.5-hour drive from Tbilisi. This picturesque destination is known for its 8,000-year-old winemaking traditions, making it one of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions. Expect rolling vineyards, charming villages, and a culture that revolves around wine, food, and warm hospitality. Here, wine and chacha aren't just drinks—it’s a way of life.
Pro Tip: The traditional Georgian winemaking method, using qvevri (large clay vessels buried underground), has earned UNESCO heritage status. Make sure to visit a winery that showcases this unique technique!

WHEN TO VISIT
The best time to explore Kakheti is from late September to October during the grape harvest season (Rtveli). This is when the region comes alive with wine festivals, traditional grape stomping, and endless tastings. The vineyards turn golden with autumn hues, making it the most scenic and festive time to visit.
If you prefer fewer crowds and milder weather, spring (April–June) is also a fantastic time to visit, with lush green landscapes and comfortable temperatures for outdoor wine tastings.
Pro Tip: Some wineries allow guests to participate in the harvest—helping pick grapes and even crushing them barefoot! If this interests you, contact your winery in advance to book a spot. Check out my post here on my harvest experience (spoiler alert: it was EVERYTHING I imagined, and more).
HOW MANY DAYS DO I NEED?
To fully appreciate Kakheti’s wineries, culinary delights, and stunning scenery, we recommend staying for 2–3 nights. This allows time for leisurely tastings, vineyard stays, and exploring charming towns like Sighnaghi and Telavi.

WHERE TO GO
Sighnaghi – Georgia’s most romantic town
A picturesque hilltop town with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored balconies, and panoramic views of the Alazani Valley. Often called the “City of Love,” Sighnaghi is perfect for a romantic getaway.
Top experiences:
Walk along the Sighnaghi Wall, one of the longest in Georgia, for breathtaking valley views.
Visit Pheasant’s Tears Winery, a pioneer in traditional qvevri winemaking, located in the heart of Sighnaghi.
Enjoy a sunset dinner at Okro’s Natural Wine, which offers one of the best terrace views in town.
Pro Tip: Stay overnight in Sighnaghi to experience its charming evening ambiance without the daytime crowds.
Telavi – The Heart of Kakheti
Telavi, the region’s largest town, serves as a convenient hub for visiting some of Kakheti’s top wineries. While it lacks Sighnaghi’s postcard-perfect charm, Telavi has historical sites and bustling local markets worth exploring.
Top Experiences:
Visit Batonis Tsikhe Fortress, a well-preserved 18th-century royal residence.
Wander through the Telavi Market for fresh produce, homemade churchkhela (Georgian nut and grape snacks), and local cheeses.
Pro Tip: Rather than staying in Telavi itself (honestly we weren't too impressed with the town, you are not missing anything if you choose to skip), book a vineyard hotel nearby to experience the best of both worlds!

WHERE TO STAY: BEST VINEYARD HOTELS
A vineyard stay in Kakheti is an experience in itself. Imagine waking up to rows of grapevines, enjoying wine tastings at sunset, and indulging in farm-to-table Georgian cuisine.
Top boutique vineyard hotels:
Hotel Qvevrebi – A unique retreat featuring qvevri-shaped rooms, offering a truly immersive experience.
Chateau Mosmieri – A luxurious vineyard hotel with a pool overlooking the vines and sunset wine tastings. The sommelier is a super nice guy who takes his time with the tastings - all tastings are private on the terrace overlooking the vines and the mountains in the distance
Chateau Artwine – A modern boutique chateau with stylish interiors, panoramic views, and an excellent in-house restaurant.
Radisson Collection Tsinandali Estate – The most luxurious hotel in Kakheti, located on the historic Tsinandali Estate, which produces some of Georgia’s finest wines. It is a little pretentious but offers an elevated experience
Pro Tip: Many vineyard hotels offer wine spa treatments, including red wine baths and grape seed scrubs—an indulgent way to unwind after a day of wine tasting!
